Metadata Advisory

As the amount of data onboard vessels increases, it is critical accurately describe and identify the data to enable its effective discovery. Metadata is a type of data that defines and describes other data and what it relates to. For data generated by a sensor onboard a vessel, metadata could provide details on the type of data being recorded or the units of the recorded data.

Metadata provides the necessary context for data to be processed and translated into usable information. Its role in describing and defining other data makes it an essential element of smart, autonomous, and remote control functions that rely on data to support decisions by humans or systems.

The ABS Metadata Advisory provides best practices for creating, using and managing metadata to support the growing development and adoption of smart, autonomous and remote-control functions in the marine and offshore industries. To learn more, download the advisory.
