Guidance on the Prohibition of Use or Storage of Extinguishing Media Containing Perfluorooctane Sulfonic Acid (PFOS)

This Regulatory News provides an update on recent amendments adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regarding fire-extinguishing media restrictions on board ships. Effective January 1, 2026, the use or storage of fire-extinguishing media containing PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonic acid) will be prohibited for both fixed and portable fire-fighting systems. New ships constructed on or after this date must comply at the time of delivery, while existing vessels must meet the new requirements at the time of their first survey on or after January 1, 2026. The prohibited substances shall be delivered to appropriate shore-based reception facilities when removed from the ship.
